Joe Barber

Joe was born and raised in Melbourne starting life as a programmer and then moved into sales and business development roles for companies including IBM, Oracle, Remedy, Informix and Cognos.

In the early 90’s Joe took his first step into business ownership and was a partner in what grew to a large systems integration firm. Soon after he was co-founder of Planet Internet – a dominant national ISP in the late 90’s.

Since then, Joe has founded 14 start-ups across various facets of the IT industry – some failed, some limped along and others were rewarding exits. Joe has spent over 25 years as a start up founder, technology evangelist, mentor and sometimes seed investor.

Joe has lived and worked in many cities including San Francisco, London, Kuala Lumpur and Sydney but always enjoys coming home to Melbourne.

For nearly 8 years Joe wrote for Marketing Magazine as a respected authority on all things mobile. Joe is a regular public speaker culminating in a global award for "Mobile Marketing Leadership” at the World Brand Congress Summit 2011.

Joe’s technical background and 25+ years of business development and innovation experience has him well regarded as a very knowledgeable “geek” and an astute businessman well rounded with numerous board and advisory roles including having been on the Board and CEO of an ASX listed company. Joe's general business, legal and financial acumen is only surpassed by his broad technical skills and enterprise development experience.

Giving back is an important life philosophy for Joe with time invested in charitable work as a Board member of Variety Charity and mentoring emerging entrepreneurs.

Joe’s current activities as a Commercialisation Advisor with AusIndustry allows him to see some of the most exciting and innovative ideas from the brightest up and coming entrepreneurs.

No one knows everything. Joe can’t cook, roller blade, fly a jet or run a marathon but he does know technology, startups and business development.
